Zimbabwe is the perfect starting place for your first trip to Africa. As a landlocked country located in southern Africa, Zimbabwe is the home of one of the world’s greatest treasures, the Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River. Made up of huge curtains of falling water, the top tourist attraction in Zimbabwe sees many visitors, especially thanks to the restaurant nearby that offers customers stunning views over the waterfall.

The Great Zimbabwe is another popular tourist attraction, consisting of the archaeological remains of a Southern African ancient city. Built entirely from stone, this area is the epicenter of the Munhumutapa Empire.

The Eastern Highlands offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside and mountains that comprise the border of Mozambique. Here you’ll find some touristic villages that offer an insight into local life. Here you can sample markets and food stalls whilst learning a little more about this fascinating borderland.

Lake Kariba is another geological draw for visitors and was created thanks to a damming project on the Zambezi River. The lake’s important because it is a source of hydro-electric power. While there, you can rent a houseboat for a few days. Here visitors can get in touch with nature, enjoy a stint of wildlife spotting and even rent a houseboat to fully get in touch with the area’s serenity.

Matobo is situated in the southwest and is a popular destination due to its rock formations. These gravity-defying geological structures are a unique result of wind erosion as sand has been blown over millions years through the stones. Antelope Park is located in Gweru, and there you will have the opportunity to walk with lions, swim with elephants, or ride horses. However, you are advised to do your own research before interacting with these animals. Otherwise, you may put yourself in danger.

Zimbabwe has 16 official languages but almost everyone speaks English. Zimbabwe is a very safe country as well but petty crimes do occur. Make sure to use your common sense, and you will not have any incidents during your trip.

Anti-malaria medication is advised for your trip. It’s important to remember that these drugs will not prevent you from getting infected, only decrease the severity of symptoms, which is why other precautions are necessary. Use nets when you sleep and cover your skin as much as possible in the evening and during the night if you are outside. HIV is also prevalent in Zimbabwe so take the necessary precautions on that front as well.

In terms of manners in Zimbabwe, it’s important to never receive something with your left hand. When you want to offer something, it must be done with your right hand as well. Also, please refrain from speaking against the Zimbabwean government. It has been reported in the past that undercover police officers will sometimes trick tourists into talking badly about the government which in Zimbabwe is a punishable crime.

No, the validity period stated on your document is the planned date of your arrival. You are indeed allowed to enter Zimbabwe at any time before your document’s expiration date as long as you do not exceed the 90 days in total maximum.
